Dave Conroy has been working with and training dogs for over twenty years. Currently, Dave is a NACSW judge and an AKC judge. Dave retired as a Sergeant from the City of Milwaukee Police Department after 30 years of service and was a K-9 handler for 9 1/2 years. Dave is one of the founding members of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association. He brings an enthusiasm for the sport and a desire to help handlers work together as a team to achieve their goals.
Dave became interested in dog training when he wanted to train his first dog not to pull him on walks. After Dave attended obedience classes, he realized he enjoyed working with his best friend and he was hooked. He went on to compete in obedience trials and had a lot of fun as their journey unfolded.
Dave was an obedience instructor for over twenty years and a director of training for a club in Milwaukee. He enjoyed helping people and their dogs achieve goals that many handlers did not feel were possible.
Dave had a passion to help people. He was a Police Officer for the City of Milwaukee Police Department. Dave was one of the first officers assigned to the new K-9 unit in the State of Wisconsin. He had the privilege of working with an imported German shepherd dog named Deuster. Deuster was a patrol dog that was trained in building searches, tracking, personal protection and narcotic detection. Dave joined the Department’s SWAT unit after he lost Deuster to cancer. Soon after, Dave was honored to start with his new partner, Etzel.
Dave, along with two others, trained Etzel in patrol work. The Department was also starting another new K-9 team. This gave Dave an opportunity to teach his dog how to work with an inexperienced handler and also Dave had to teach the inexperienced handler how to work with his dog. This new handler had an outstanding career with his K-9 partner. During the course of Dave’s career with the the Department’s K-9 unit, he was always looking for ways to to improve the Department and he attended numerous K-9 seminars.
Dave is one of the founding members of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handler Association [WLECHA]. This association is comprised of K-9 handlers from the State of Wisconsin. They meet annually for conference and training. Dave has received numerous awards from WLECHA which includes: K-9 officer of the year, Meritorious Track and several awards for Outstanding Narcotic finds.
Dave’s love of dog training is still ongoing. He is currently a judge for NACSW and AKC and accepts assignments all over the country. Dave has been judging for over seven years. He has judged thousands of teams. He is often complimented by handlers for his encouraging words on their score sheets or after trialing their dogs with him. Dave is always willing to answer questions from handlers.
